November 24th, 2010, against an all-encompassing fog,
staff from One Foundation and its philanthropic partner, Friends of Nature set
off from Chengdu. Their destination is Heihu Elementary School in Mao County.
Early morning of the next day, members of the five major project
supporters, namely One Foundation, Mao County Red Cross, Friends of Nature,
Director of Mao County Education Department and Heihu Elementary school
gathered together and witness the launch of the new campus. Campus designers,
builders and supervisors also attended the ceremony.
The young pioneers stand in straight lines and salute. The flag
raising ceremony marks the campus has come into service. During the ceremony,
the designers cried a few times due to excitement. But the tears were soon
replaced by a lively and cheerful atomosphere. The new campus was completely in time. Neat stone walls, clean
room, spacious playground accompany children’s laughter. The school is imbued with
vitality and has become the most beautiful rural scenery of the Heihu village. The
Heihu Elementary School boasts a brand new campus for the children in the
disaster affected areas. It not only preserved cultural traits of the Qiang minorities
but also made possible many green ideas. The construction used recycled, renewable,
recyclable materials. The use of advanced technology guaranteed indoor comfort,
energy conservation, scientific use of solar and biogas, and proper water and
waste treatment. Friends of Nature colleagues continued to train school
teachers and students of environmental protection how-tos to bring up the
low-carbon awareness. Many have walked the same path because the same ideal. More help
are needed to develop education in the affected areas. Let’s hope the future
for Heihu Elementary School will be even brighter.
