A M5.8 earthquake hit Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province at 12:58 a.m., March 10, which killed 25 and affected 280,000 people. One Foundation initiated its emergency plan immediately after the earthquake. Dehong Chapter of Yunnan Huofeng Rescue Team – member of One Foundation Rescue League quickly assembled and hurried from Mangshi to Yingjiang with special rescue equipments. One Foundation held overnight emergency meeting to discuss the most urgent material needs in the disaster area, and decided to allocate RMB 500,000 for purchasing small tents, powdered milk, emergency lamps, environmental-friendly flashlights and mosquito repellent.
From March 10 to March 12, One Foundation Rescue League carried out search and rescue in the disaster area, demolished dilapidated buildings and helped local residents to recover their properties. One Foundation staff also arrived at Kunming to procure relief material. The search and rescue operation was essentially finished on March 13, and the focus of the Rescue League shifted to distribution of material to earthquake victims and putting up tents for them. On the same day, the color-stripes fabric and personal hygiene products purchased by One Foundation were delivered to Yingjiang.
At 14:46 p.m., March 11, another disaster took place. This time, a M9.0 earthquake hit Japan, causing tsunami and nuclear fallout. As of 8:00, March 15, 2,414 people were confirmed dead and 3,118 were missing.
The earthquakes in Yunnan and Japan caused severe casualty and property loss, and broke the hearts of One Foundation and all Family Members in the world. One Foundation and its Family Members wish to extend their sincere condolence to the victims and pray for the people in the disaster areas. Meanwhile, One Foundation Family Members are deeply worried about all Chinese citizens and expatriates living in Japan, and hope them safe and sound.
One Foundation has always been dedicated to emergency disaster relief and promotion of the philanthropic concept of “One World One Family, Care for Each Other”. It will provide RMB 500,000 through China Red Cross Foundation to Japan Red Cross Foundation as humanitarian assistance against this tragedy. At the same time, One Foundation will call for more donations from Family Members for the affected people in Yunnan and Japan who, we believe, will endure this difficult time, as the earthquakes may destroy houses but not our will to hold together and face the challenge.
One Foundation appeals for participation from all sectors of the society to do their bits and provide more help and support to the affected people so that they can rebuild their home as early as possible.
