Tetra Laval Group donated for the construction of the waste sorting station. One Foundation, Tetra Laval Group and Pengzhou Municipal Administration will work together for the construction in Laishou village, Tianpeng town, Pengzhou City. Land layout and equipment biding have been completed by now and it’s estimated the station will be put into use by April 2009. Pengzhou Municipal Administration will takeover the station for daily operation after construction is completed.

On the ground breaking ceremony, secretary of Pengzhou Municipal Party Committee and Mayor Mr. Han Yi expressed his thanks to One Foundation and Tetra Laval Group for the support. He vowed to facilitate reconstruction work. One Foundation’s founder Mr. Jet Li said: “a lot of subsistence goods have been distributed, but we need to know more about affected people’s needs. Philanthropy is not almsgiving; it’s about caring each family member, knowing their needs. I’m glad that we can work with Tetra Laval Group for a clearer environment for family members in Pengzhou.” As sponsor of the project, Tetra China’s vice president Ms. Yang bin said: ”Tetra Laval Group has attached great importance to corporate social responsibility and has been actively involved in philanthropy, especially environmental projects. We’re glad that our cooperation with One Foundation will help the affected people in rebuilding a better home.”

Pengzhou city is a hub city in northern Chengdu province. After the quake, local wastes are collected and shipped, but the lack of processing power resulted in long hours of waste exposure, emitting bad smells and harbors pests. Secondary contamination was common. One Foundation project manager started on the spot survey in July 2008 and worked with Tetra Laval Group to assess and analyze project feasibility. The study included interviews with the locals and inviting resident representative to tour similar waste sorting stations so that the locals understand sorting station will not damage their living environment. Finally, One Foundation Pengzhou city domestic waste sorting station project was formed, it was also One Foundation’s first reconstruction environmental protection project.

Family Members Gathered in Affected Area

After the ground breaking ceremony, One Foundation and Tetra China staff went to Pengzhou municipal government building for further cooperation. On their way, they met founder and director of Global Village of Beijing, also One Foundation’s expert volunteer, Mr. Liao Xiaoyi who happened to be in Pengzhou for Lohas Home. Global Village of Beijing is one of the seven winners of One Foundation’s 2008 China Global Philanthropy Awards, and the only environmental protection organization out of the seven winners. One Foundation members gave Mr. Liao a warm hug and exchanged progress information of their respective projects.
