December 16, 2010. Deep winter brought significant temperature drop to Guangping Town, Ningqiang County, one of the disaster areas hit by 5.12 earthquake. Elderly villagers who had been suffering from chronic illnesses were experiencing relapses caused by the cold. On this day, the Ningqiang Post-Disaster Reconstruction Office of Shannxi Research Association for Women and Family, along with the town government, held a ceremony to distribute medical kits donated by One Foundation. Eighty household medical kits raised by One Foundation from Shiqiang Group were to be handed to five-guarantees families and poor families that lived far from hospitals and had difficulty buying medicine. Therefore the villagers were beaming with smiles when they received the medical kits.
Zhang Hailang, the deputy town chief presided over the ceremony and expressed gratitude towards One Foundation and charity-minded enterprises for their effort to alleviate medicine shortage in the remote mountain regions. Special guests attending the ceremony included doctors from Guangping Hospital who explained the medicine usage and some common health knowledge. Representative from Ningqiang Project Office also gave introduction of the medical kits, and urged people to mind safety of the medicines and pay close attention to the health of their family and their own.
The ceremony was crowded with people. As the medical kits were distributed, the villagers also exchanged much health knowledge with each other. Some villager held our hands and said emotionally: “You are so kind to think of our health as the temperature drops. You offer help when we need it most, especially for old people and who suffer from chronic illnesses. Now we can survive this winter with nothing to worry about. Thank you so much!” ”
At nearby Qing Mu Chuan Town, 40 medical kits were also delivered into the hands of poor villagers, who were very grateful because many elders got sick recently due to the cold weather and these medical supplies met their needs just in time.
In addition, Shannxi Research Association for Women and Family delivered another 80 medical kits to poor families and teachers belonging to 9 rural kindergartens, 3 self-employed women, 3 project partners and 1 community public service organization in the Baoji region, which were all supported by One Foundation’s Women Entrepreneurship Project.
So far, Shannxi Research Association for Women and Family has distributed 200 medical kits donated by One Foundation, benefiting more than 1,200 people in 3 districts (counties) and over a dozen of towns. The medical kits received by the villagers can also be used by other vulnerable groups in the village, like the five-guarantees families, poor families, seniors, women and children, who will received timely treatment when they get sick in the winter but find it hard to acquire medicine. This good deed has been highly praised and thanked by the villagers and project partners!
