May 20, 2009, One Foundation launched its Green Home Project in Yujiang village, Luoshui county, Shifang city. The municipal government, One Foundation and Green Cross laid foundation for the project. The Projects adopts an open approach to inspire villager participation in home reconstruction and development and will accumulate experiences for rural ecology, production, environment and economic development through ability building and training. Affected directly by the 5.12 earthquake, the village is seriously crippled with 90% of building collapsed. The Central Committee of CPC dictates that the reconstruction work should go hand in hand with new rural construction to fully cater the need of rural population. This directive opens a new path for Yujiang village. local government is deprived of sufficient experiences and funds to establish standards for good quality buildings. Facing the challenge, One Foundation initiated the Green Home project in Yujiang village. One Foundation provides funding, Beijing Green Cross provides design and planning. The Project aims at facilitating the construction of an economical, eco-friendly and unique residential and public system while preserving the characteristics of local landscape.

Laying the Foundation

        Green Cross is responsible for execution of Green Home project. The implementation will include green concepts: vegetation will cover 50% of the planned area. Considering the bio-diversity of local plants, the greenery plantation will use local seeds. Apart from that, construction of houses will use eco-friendly bricks and salvaged materials from old buildings.  Meanwhile, the Baiyu river outside the village will be channeled in to form a natural circulation of water to avoid formation of reservoir sediment and polluted wetlands. In the reconstruction process, One Foundation and Green Cross will strive to popularize trash categorization knowledge and cultivate sanitation awareness to effectively improve local environment and living quality while reducing cost.

        Green Home will become an example village of post disaster reconstruction. Based on the original administrative layout, the new village will be divided into eight theme cultural communities. These are tea culture, agricultural culture, water culture, Shu and Han culture, wine culture, new year picture culture(Li Bing Relic), San Xingdui culture and earthquake culture. Meanwhile, Yujiang village’s commercial housing will adopt local flavors. For example, these flavors include the mud city relic of Yujiang, Ge Shuoge tea house of Luoshui county and tenon-through frame houses. The project also features the integration of traditional Chuanxi culture into villagers’ livelihood,

        One Foundation expects that before June, 2010, All of Yujiang villagers will be able to move in the permanent housed constructed by Green Home project and start a new life.
