June 11, 2009, One Foundation Sunny School – Huang Yangguan Tibetan Town Central Elementary School started construction in the school’s original site. This 3 million RMB project is one of One Foundation’s post-quake reconstruction efforts after Children Welfare Center in Aba Autonomous Prefecture and Hei Hu elementary school in Mao county. Huang Yangguan Tibetan Town is located in northwest Pingwu, upstream from Pei river and close to the middle section of Huang Yang river. The old folklore tells a pair of gold dzeren, thus the name of the town. Huang Yangguan, 55 km from the town was once an important defensive pass connecting Kuoda and Mupi village to the east, Shuijing to the south, Xiaohe and Shijiabao to the west and Baima to the north. The town covers 199 square meters, with 6 administrative villages, 16 villager groups, 95 students and a total population of 2300(33% of which is Tibetan). In 2003, Huang Yangguan Tibetan Town combined its four elementary schools and formed the first lodging school called Huang Yangguan Tibetan Town Central Elementary School. The school had 95 students and 15 staff.
5.12 earthquake severely damaged people’s lives and wealth. 486 m2 of teaching building, 417 m2 of multi-purpose space, 400 m2 of lodging area, 125 m2 of toilet, 226 m2 of lab and 72 m2 of storage spaces had been destroyed in the quake. After the quake, the students had to continue their schooling in makeshift houses. Lodging students had to sleep in a ten bed makeshift dorm. The normal schooling activities were virtually impossible. To solve the problem. One Foundation sent an probe team to the spot and conducted on site investigation, evolution and finally initiated a 3 million RMB project to provide students and teachers with improved infrastructures.
One Foundation Sunny School – Huang Yangguan Tibetan Town Central Elementary School is going to construct nearly 900 m2 of multi-purpose building, 300 m2 of student dormitory and 150 m2 of student canteen. These facilities will be able to serve 112 students and allow 80 lodging students. Meanwhile, the reconstruction will adopt local Tibetan elements in building designs. The project is expected to complete by October this year.
