The "Jet Li One Foundation Project" (One Foundation) founded by Jet Li in partnership with the Red Cross Society of China held its kick-off press conference in Beijing on April 19, 2007. During the event, Jet Li shared the mission and the purpose of this project. The total amount of donations raised and the progress of the project in the initial stage were also publicized for the first time. Over one hundred media outlets from mainland China and internationally were in attendance.
The One Foundation was founded by Red Cross ambassador Jet Li. As an umbrella project of the Red Cross Society of China, the One Foundation works independently to pursue its charitable mission and agenda. Embodying the Red Cross' spirit of humanity and philanthropy, the project believes that in helping others we will also find our own happiness. The goals of the project are to provide—to the best of our ability—prompt and efficient relief to victims of natural disasters, as well as to help youth coping with mental health issues. The name of the project "one" represents that we share a planet which make us one global family. By helping others, we are also helping ourselves. Together we can overcome any challenge or difficulty.
After surviving the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, Jet Li realized that immediate and efficient disaster relief could help alleviate the suffering of victims. Therefore, the One Foundation aims to proactively prepare and organize to provide immediate aid to disaster victims. In addition, Jet Li is greatly concerned about the increasing number of youths suffering from mental illness. That's why the One Foundation also aims to promote mental well-being and improve mental health awareness. Currently there is no charity organization that covers these two areas in mainland China.
As the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the "One Foundation", Jet announced the total donation amount received to date and introduced the progress of the project during the initial stage. He also invited the media and members of society to supervise the use of the money. Without any formal publicity and promotion before the ceremony, the One Foundation already received meaningful media coverage and support. To date, the One Foundation Project has received 4 million RMB in donation from corporations and enterprises like Thomson Group, Media Asia Films Inc, Suzhou Dawei Floor and Changzhou Lvneng Electric Bicycles Technology Development Co. Besides these major donors, private individuals have also donated. Mobile phone donation records shows that more than 110,000 people have donated to the project by sending text messages to 1069-999309 and over 200 more people have joined as permanent volunteers.
Actresses Xu Jinglei and Zhou Xun, as representatives of the permanent volunteers of One Foundation, attended the press conference and called for public attention and support to the foundation. Others celebrities such as Jay Chou, Andy Lau, Peter Chan, John Woo, and numerous others expressed their support via a taped video. In addition, student groups from over 10 leading universities have joined as student volunteers to help promote the foundation. Also in attendance at the press conference were directors from China Film Group, SOHU, Tencent Charity Foundation, and Trends Esquire Magazine. These media companies have signed agreements to support the foundation as media partners. These companies promised to do their best to provide resources and platforms for the foundation. |
