Thailand’s TO BE NUMBER ONE foundation
TO BE NUMBER ONE means social groups with “No drugs and strive for the best.” The foundation aims to prevent and address drug dependency. Princess Ubol Ratana is the chairman. The fund advocates young people to stay away from drugs and crimes and live a positive and upbeat lifestyle, to better promote physical and mental health by helping them to develop life social skills and networks. At the moment, the fund has more than 30 million members which covers young people from 10 to 24.
Background of the establishment of TO BE NUMBER ONE
On January 31st, 2003, the Thai government waged war against drugs. The government achieved many victories in the struggle against drug producers, individuals and groups as well as in the addict rehabitation.
But soon the narcotic alternatives such as alcohol began to emerge. Because the addicts had to use these alternatives to gradually get rid of the addiction, drug abuse became a problem. Education officials estimated 10% of youth are involved in it. To solve the problem, a long term plan was created to arouse public awareness, from academic, human resource and service sector.
Under these circumstances, Princess Ubol Ratana was determined to make a difference. The theme of the movement was “you can be the best only if you stay away from drugs.” Mental Health Ministry was authorized to join the efforts. To cover a wider base, TO BE NUMBER ONE fund was finally established.
